Moat House, A contemporary energy efficient home, Stour Row
An energy efficient 'letterbox' house with rural views of Stour Row, North Dorset.
This contemporary 4 bedroom house was designed for a couple of self-builders who had no experience of contemporary architecture, having previously lived in barn conversions.
The designers concept was for a simple white box which takes advantage of its south facing plot with large floor to ceiling sliding doors framing stunning long distance views. The building 'blinkers' the neigbouring bungalows to the side of the plot.
Southerley glazing provide passive solar heating. Space heating by heat pump and water heated by solar panels make this a very energy efficient house. Rainwater to be recycled is collected in the moat around the house, which then becomes an infinity pool.
The entire ground floor of this contemporary house is open plan with each room flowing into the next giving it a spacious feel to the interior.

“The concept of framing the view over open countryside generated this simple modernist form, which with the support of enthusiastic clients and a good builder has resulted in a simple and successful contemporary house. The house also allowed us to explore the installation of various forms of alternative energy sources, such as ground source heat pumps, solar thermal panels and rain water harvesting.”
