The proposed three bed house is vernacular in form but incorporates subtle contemporary details. It was designed to reflect a simple farm courtyard, suited to the surrounding open countryside. The orientation of the new house maintains the north - south axis with a similar footprint to that of the existing bungalow.
The external elevations face the road to the north. The lane to the east was kept simple with minimal fenestration to maintain occupier privacy and prevent heat loss through north-facing glazing. The principal elevation faces south west and includes a large façade of glazing to benefit from the panoramic views across the surrounding fields and maximise the opportunity for solar gain.
The principal living accommodation was moved to first floor level to make the most of these views. Kitchen and dining spaces are located at ground floor level to give good access to the external private amenity spaces.
