From Agricultural barn to boutique retreat
Not every design reaches construction, but every project is an opportunity to explore ideas and demonstrate what is possible. This concept for a boutique shoot lodge in Exmoor National Park showcases Western Design Architects’ ability to transform agricultural buildings into contemporary architecture that remains rooted in its rural setting.
Set within a secluded farmstead, the proposal reimagined an existing agricultural barn as a refined countryside retreat. The design carefully balanced modern architecture with the character of the original building, creating a destination that respected both its agricultural heritage and the surrounding landscape.
A restrained palette of charred timber cladding gave the building a contemporary identity while reflecting the weathered appearance of traditional farm buildings, allowing it to sit comfortably within the landscape.
Inside, the lodge was designed around the guest experience, combining practical facilities for shoot days with luxurious accommodation, generous communal spaces and wellness amenities. Robust materials and refined interiors created a building that was both hardworking and welcoming.
The project highlights WDA’s thoughtful approach to the adaptive reuse of rural buildings, demonstrating how agricultural structures can be reimagined as distinctive contemporary destinations without losing their connection to place.
