WDA are thrilled to have gained planning approval for this substantial contemporary extension to an existing care home.

Dorset Council planning committee unanimously approved our Planning and Listed Building Consent applications for a significant two storey extension to the Grade II Listed Casterbridge Manor care home in Cerne Abbas.  The new 20 extra care housing living units providing specialist housing accommodation will all be supplemented with care and support packages from the existing care home.

Despite being contrary to the local plan policy, being outside the settlement boundary of the village and located within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, approval was granted following a constructive pre application process with the Local Authority.  Extensive public consultation with the local community was also undertaken including a presentation to the Parish Council. The proposal is also within sight of the Grade 1 Cerne Abbas Giant monument, but the officers and Councillors considered the layout and design responded carefully and uniquely to its specific context and site constraints and the proposal will result in no significant harm.

Four individual blocks of accommodation are arranged in the form of a loose cruciform shape and establish an internal street to echo the historical layout of the existing former workhouse building built in 1837.  The street will provide a bright and stimulating social environment for residents, staff and visitors to the building.  Subservient in scale to the listed building, the new wing will be finished with a green bio-diverse roof, Purbeck stone at ground floor and natural timber cladding at first floor.
