Recently completed – A stylish new timber clad extension to a historic cottage in Shroton

Nestled in the Dorset countryside, ‘Hedges’ was a cherished family home in need of some thoughtful care and attention, to improve its comfort and functionality for everyday living.

Western Design Architects approached this project with sensitivity and care, bringing our expertise to all aspects of the renovation:

  • A new two storey extension provides a larger kitchen with a dramatic vaulted ceiling, along with a new toilet and utility at ground floor. An ensuite created at first floor is a welcome addition. The external walls are beautifully detailed with vertical western red cedar cladding, in varied widths.
  • A new brick porch doubles up as a log store and provides seating to enjoy warm summer days.  The design is a great improvement on the previous part glazed lean-to.
  • All single glazed windows were replaced with like-for-like, double-glazed alternatives.
  • Reconstructed chimney tops and new French drains, alleviate damp issues.
  • A new first floor window provide light into the bedroom
  • Replacement of failing timber beam with a steel beam
  • Full rewire, including sockets and light fittings

The new additions and modern upgrades to the thatched cottage transform a once cold and cramped holiday home into a delightful welcoming country retreat.
